sA Life Rebuilt Through Courage and Spice
In the quiet village of Sudumalai
in Jaffna, the aroma of sun-dried herbs, chilies, and traditional spices drifts
through the air, a scent that carries the story of 70-year-old Alakeshwari.
Once a devoted teacher, her life changed forever when she lost her husband, the
partner who had been her anchor in every storm. Grief was not new to her; she
had already endured the unimaginable loss of her children. But this time, the
silence of her home felt heavier, the days longer, and the nights colder. [1340]
Yet, within this silence, she
found a reason to keep moving. The small business she once ran alongside her
husband became her lifeline. Drawing strength from memories and determination,
she transformed it into “her battle for survival”, a venture that would give
her both purpose and dignity. With the support of women’s organizations, she
began producing her beloved range of traditional products: moringa leaf
vadagam, neem flower vadagam, mango vadagam, sundakai vadagam, muttama,
pickles, sattuma, and more, over 15 varieties in all. [1281, 1283,
1287, 1292, 1299]
Her products were not just food;
they were pieces of heritage, carrying the medicinal and nutritional wisdom of
a bygone era. Tourists from far and wide began to visit, drawn by the
authenticity and uniqueness of her offerings. “I have no one,” she says with
quiet strength. “God has taken everyone
away from me… but I will stand on my own two feet. I want my life to have
meaning, and this is how I find it.”
Her mission extends beyond
business. She wants the younger generation to rediscover the forgotten benefits
of traditional foods. Neem, once a common and vital part of children’s diets,
has faded from modern taste buds because of its bitterness. But in her skilled
hands, neem blends into vadagam without losing its healing power, strong proof
that the old ways can find a place in today’s kitchens.[1329, 1302]
The journey has been far from
easy. She has faced lack of capital, transportation difficulties, rising costs,
and even betrayal by those she trusted, including a heartbreaking incident when
an employee took Rs. 10,000 from her during her illness. Still, she refuses to
surrender. Her words echo like a mantra: “No
matter how hard life is, never lose self-confidence. If we act clearly, life
will make us live.”
Today, her dream is to grow her
venture into a one-stop business with a dedicated building, packaging
equipment, and attractive branding, ensuring that her products and her legacy
continue to thrive. To the generations that follow, she hopes her life will
serve as a guide: a testament that even in the face of unimaginable loss,
resilience can turn sorrow into strength, and tradition into opportunity.[1343]
