Her Story

Rising from the Ashes: The Story of Christian Lenaud Kamalambika

In the war-ravaged village of Mirusuvil, Jaffna, Christian Lenaud Kamalambika’s life embodies survival, loss, and unwavering determination. After the tragic loss of her husband during the conflict, Kamalambika became the sole provider for her children in a landscape marred by scarcity and uncertainty. Employment opportunities were scant, and the modest wages she earned through sporadic factory work scarcely covered life’s essentials, let alone her children’s education.

In 2012, propelled by desperation and a flicker of hope, Kamalambika embarked on a bold venture. With no formal training and minimal capital, she began crafting traditional snacks: tattavadai, sattuma, kachan, peanuts, and mixers from her modest kitchen. Each day, she cycled miles, personally delivering her handmade goods to local shops. “At first,” she recalls, “I chopped ingredients with just a bunch of flowers. It took hours. But I had no other choice.”[1490, 1496, 1500, 1511]

Her fledgling business gained momentum until 2016, when illness forced her to halt operations. Battling poor health and emotional strain for years, Kamalambika’s resolve never wavered. In 2020, rejuvenated and determined, she courageously relaunched her enterprise.

The second chapter proved tougher. Without savings, familial support, or confidence, she faced scarcity of raw materials, unreliable transportation, and malfunctioning equipment. Yet, undeterred, Kamalambika single-handedly repaired and acquired over 18 pieces of packaging machinery, each milestone a testament to her grit.

Today, her venture thrives. Her products grace over 20 small shops and five larger outlets across the Jaffna district. Monthly production has soared from a mere quarter kilo to over 50 kilos, with more than 500 snack packets sold each month. Supported by the Viludhu organization and the Sanjeevi sales platform, Kamalambika expanded her reach through enhanced marketing and improved packaging. Her affordable snacks delight customers from all walks of life.

Despite social pressures, envy, and fierce competition, Kamalambika’s perseverance remains resolute. Beyond rebuilding her own life, she empowers others by employing two women from marginalized backgrounds, creating opportunities where hope is scarce.

“My dream was to live debt-free and provide for my children’s education,” she reflects. “That dream is now reality. Women like me must nurture patience and courage. Sometimes success is simply about never giving up.”

Christian Lenaud Kamalambika’s journey is a powerful testament: when a woman believes in herself, no adversity can impede her ascent. Through steadfast resolve, she has forged not merely a business but a legacy of resilience and inspiration. [1520, 1521]
