Her Story

From Broken Paths to Blended Solutions: Jeevaranee’s Self-Made Journey

The scent of fresh herbs and the quiet bubbling of handmade washing liquid now fill the home of Jeevaranee, a 43-year-old mother from Jaffna. But just a few years ago, her life was marked not by industry, but uncertainty. In 2018, a sudden separation from her husband left her solely responsible for raising three children. With no steady income, little support, and no formal job skills, she faced a crossroad: give in to despair or carve a new path forward.

She chose the latter.

What began as a self-taught tailoring venture soon evolved into something greater. After participating in a Samurdhi training program on liquid detergent production, she emerged not only with new knowledge but with purpose. Out of 30 women trained, she was the only one who transformed the lesson into a sustainable business. Her handcrafted washing liquid, now known for its fragrance and effectiveness, became her first best-selling product, with nearly 70 bottles distributed monthly in the Vadamarachchi region. Encouraged by her early success, Jeevaranee began expanding her repertoire. Today, her home shelves display a vibrant range of natural, home-produced goods: crispy banana snacks, traditional sattuma, spiced kharadhuul, koppi blends, and seeyakai powder. Each item is born from tradition, produced with care, and priced for accessibility. Seasonal herbs like avaram and neem flowers are carefully dried and powdered, treasured by those seeking wellness through nature. [1738]

But this journey has not been without hardship. Health issues, rising production costs, raw material shortages, and debt from microloans have made growth difficult. And yet, her motivation remains unwavering and it mainly stems from her children. Her daughter, a merit certificate holder, is awaiting university admission while her sons excel in science and mathematics. Her income also supports a student abandoned by his parents, a gesture that reflects her own past struggles.

“These bottles were my beginning. I didn’t wait for help, I created it,” she says. “Even now, I want other women to know: you don’t need a perfect start to build something worthwhile.”

Jeevaranee dreams of expanding her product line, reaching wider markets, and gaining proper equipment to scale production. But more than anything, she hopes her story encourages others to believe in what they can build or rebuild, even when the path seems impossible. [1729]
