The Empowered Entrepreneur: Jeitha’s Recipe for Growth
In the resilient village of Kaithadi, Jaffna, where stories of endurance float on the wind, Jeitha, a 40-year-old entrepreneur and mother of two, has carved a remarkable path. For thirteen years, she has led her household alone following the separation from her husband. She embodies determination, vision, and integrity despite material scarcity.[0908]
What began as necessity soon became a calling. Three years ago, Jeitha launched “Aadhavan,” a brand dedicated to wholesome, chemical-free foods made with ancestral wisdom under the parent company “Jayappa.” Her mission is deeply personal: to nourish her community with authentic, unadulterated products born of care, not compromise.[0917]
“I don’t add any coloring to the yam,” she asserts. “I roast green yam over a wood-fired oven, preserving its purity. I tell my children to eat it as confidently as medicine prescribed by a doctor.”[0960]
Starting modestly with chili powder and a 10,000-rupee investment, she has since expanded to over ten handcrafted delicacies ranging from koppi, kanjikalavai, yam puttu, kurinja leaf puttu, banana flower vadagam, neem flower vadagam, onion flower vadagam, sattu, and uzhunthuma - all crafted not in factories but in her traditional kitchen.[0942, 0951, 0910]
Jeitha’s journey, however, has faced societal scrutiny and logistical challenges. “Sometimes a bus arrives at night with an order,” she recalls. “People whisper, ‘Why is she out so late?’ But if you listen to them, you’ll never progress. We must rely on ourselves.”
With formal education interrupted at age ten due to war, Jeitha began with uncertainty. Yet, training through the Divisional Secretariat and local institutions honed her business acumen, transforming her into a self-taught professional. “I have no father, no husband, no siblings,” she says. “But I support myself. God gave me strength to face life head-on.”
Today, Jeitha employs four women, all from female-headed households, extending opportunities to others like herself. Her products, recognized beyond her community, are featured consistently on the Sanjeevi sales platform, aided by Viludhu’s support. Though large commercial competitors challenge her through pricing tactics, she remains steadfast.
Jeitha’s vision is expansive: to innovate, expand production, export under her own brand, and create meaningful employment for women confronting similar struggles.[0924,0926]
In every package of Aadhavan food, there is more than flavor - it carries the essence of a woman who transformed hardship into hope, and tradition into triumph.
