Komini’s Homegrown Business Journey
In a small corner of Sarasalai in Chavakachcheri, Komini, a 37-year-old mother of two, has built a thriving home-based business from scratch. What began as a way to support her children’s education and manage rising household costs has now grown into a respected small-scale enterprise. Her story is one of self-learning, perseverance, and the courage to carve her own path despite initial resistance and limited resources. [1045]
Facing financial strain and her husband’s lack of support, Komini took it upon herself to learn how to make cleaning products by studying books, watching videos, and experimenting on her own. Her determination led to the creation of over 10 types of household products, including Indian Nettle cleaners, detergent powders, mopping liquids, washing machine powder, fabric blue, shampoo, and handcrafted perfumes. Her products are not only effective but also popular for their affordability and homemade quality. [998, 1004, 1005, 1008, 1012, 1016, 1021]
Starting with small local sales, she soon joined the Sanjeevi platform, where her products quickly gained popularity and began reaching a wider customer base across the region. Her products are distributed across Jaffna, Chavakachcheri, Chunnakam, Tirunelveli, and Koppai, gaining attention for their consistent quality and thoughtful packaging. Recently, under the guidance of a local trainer, she expanded into spice production, introducing items like sambol blends that complement her homecare line.
What truly distinguishes Komini is not only the quality and variety of her products, but also her visionary leadership. With a strong sense of purpose and community responsibility, she has taken two local women under her wing, offering them stable employment and the chance to enhance their own economic independence. Komini leads by example, demonstrating resilience, initiative, and a deep commitment to collective progress. Her long-term vision includes expanding her enterprise, establishing a well-equipped production facility, and reaching a broader customer base, goals she pursues not only for personal success, but to uplift those around her.
Despite her success, Komini still faces obstacles such as a lack of workspace, limited equipment, and marketing barriers. However, she is determined to overcome these in the near future.
She says with confidence:
“We can’t wait forever for help. Women have to take charge. If we work hard, we can achieve more than we imagine. Not just for ourselves, but for our families and others too.” [1040, 1029]
